Nat Turner’s Slave Rebellion was widely considered to be one of the most successful rebellions by the African American people, so long as its success was measured by the deaths of the white people. Nat Turner’s rebellion was not the first slave revolt by far, there were up to five hundred recognized slave revolts. Although there were usually losses, none of the uprisings led to anything in the way of changes happening. To begin with, Nat Turner was born in South Hampton County, Virginia on October 2, 1800. Turner was also known to be an extremely religious man; he would often be seen fasting or reading the bible. He even believed that he could hear spirits talking to him. Eventually, after being distraught and mistreated, Nat Turner began to see his spirits talking to him as a sign to act and to fight the white people. He would see spirits fighting and saw that as a signal that he needed to do the same to be free. In February of 1831, a solar eclipse was taken by Nat Turner as a sign to act out against the enslavers. He gathered six other men to join the cause to kill the white oppressors. Nat decided to start his rebellion at his own master’s house, stole his enslaved guns, and decided that he had to be the first one to “spill blood” for this revolt. Jerusalem was the next stop on their murder spree, they would go from house to house, taking down the white oppressors and letting other enslaved people join them and their cause. At Jerusalem, their numbers reached up to fifty or sixty people. It did not take long at this point for word to spread of their rebellion. Outside of the rebellion’s next target’s house, a group of armed soldiers sat waiting for Turner. The rebellion fell apart while trying to escape, but Turner was able to find more people
