On the twelfth month,, Washington marched his exhausted, beaten, starving and sick army to valley forge, a place about 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia, which was occupied by the british. From Valley Forge, Washington could look over General Howe's British army staying in Philadelphia. At Valley Forge, there were shortages of supplies. This was everything from food to clothing to medication. Washington's soldiers were sick from disease, hunger, and exposure.
The article, What’s The Matter With Eastern Kentucky, by Annie Lowrey, eastern Kentucky is depicted as the hardest place to live in the country. In the article, she says that six of eastern Kentucky’s counties (Breathitt, Clay, Jackson, Lee, Leslie, and Magoffin) are ranked in the bottom ten counties in the country. These are coal counties and because of the recent political changes, coal counties have been povertized. The article mainly focuses on Clay County. There are many statistics about the downfall of the economy and the downfall of coal.
In "Natural Bridge/Rogue River Canyon," Paul Halupa draws a picture of two dominate forces, a wall of lava and a river. Both the lava and the river are metaphors, lava being the inevitable end of life and the river is the present life that is unstoppable; raging towards the lava. Halupa overall tone isn't sad, but understanding. He understands that people work hard all their life; moving fast and not appreciating how short life is. Halupa’s poem expresses the human condition is like a match, it has an explosive start, then stays consistent till it slows down and burns out.

He used his environment to his advantage. He hid his warriors most of which were women in “rifleman holes.” This allowed the Nez Perce to ambush the Union soldiers while they were resting at their makeshift camps. Even though Chief Joseph was extremely smart, he was unable to provide essential necessities such as food, water and clothes so his people were freezing and starving to death. Through it all they continued to follow him.

Bloom talks about a big issue concerning American in 2010 and is still an issue today in 2016, six years after he wrote this book.
