On the great day of August 7, 1742 one of our great generals was born. His name was Nathanael Greene. He lived for Forty Four years (1742-1786). He was one of the most respected generals of the Revolutionary War. When he was a child his education was limited, all though he received a good teaching with the available books, such as the Bible. Therefore built his moral ideals, purposes, and his habits of living. Nathanael was a well behaved, nice child. He Loved to read books. Since his education was limited, he loved to read books about mathematics, military science, and history. When Greene was a young man he went to work daily, at the family iron foundry. Greene). Together, Catherine and Nathanael had six children. They had two boys and four girls. Catherine Greene, one of the girls died as an infant because of a serious case of the whooping cough. Later in life he took an active part in community affairs. Nathanael knew there was great value to one's education. So he helped to establish the very first public school. When the pacifist Quaker authorities found out about his interest in military affairs, the main committee called him for an interview. Greene stated that even though he was a quaker, that he would not be turned from the studies that interested him, and the case was dismissed. Around the time of 1775 Nathanael was electted the commander of the Rhode Island Army. He served in the army for eight ( 8 ) years, 1175-1783. In 1776 he was made a major general. General Greene was great friends with George Washington at the time, and fought many battles, and led many troops. Nathanael traveled to Savannah, GA on a business trip, on June 12, 1786. On his way home, he stopped at one of his friends plantations, and was exposed to the very hot rays of the Sun. When Nathanael returned, he became very ill, and died on June 19, 1786.
