The lack of community services for suicidal individuals or their families left Keiski alienated from society. Due to Keiksi’s personal experience with her friend’s suicide, she says: “We, as a society, need to stop stigmatizing the friends and relatives of suicide victims and start helping them” (Keiski 94). As Keiski explains in her story, communities have more services to help suicidal individuals, yet almost no services in communities that support friends or relatives of suicide victims. When Keiski’s best friend committed suicide she felt alone and grieving with no one to comfort her since the friend that would have comforted her just passed. Keiski’s personal experience with an almost-family member self-harming resulted in her suffering from the alienation of society.
In the novel Sula, Toni Morrison focuses on the relationship between the protagonist Sula Peace and the foil Nel Wright, as well as their path to womanhood. Yet, Morrison includes details of the events within the upbringing and adulthood of each of their mothers. When the girls became young adults, their conduct within society resembled those of their mothers. The actions a mother takes are noticed by her daughter. In fact, a mother’s demeanor within society, may be inherited by her daughter.

Suicide is a growing issue in the United States and around the world. Utah has the fouth highest suicide rate in the United States with 21 suicides per 1,000. The novel Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton outlines the steps taken by Ethan and Mattie that lead to their attempted suicide: First, there was the influence from the people in Ethan’s life and how they can invoke misery, second a sense of hopelessness and how it is displayed through nature, and third the decision to utimately end their lives after recognizing their unique (or so it seems) unhappiness. These steps successfully mimick those faced by real world people who stuggle with depression thoughts of suicide.

The idea of loyalty as a theme in Toni Morrison’s Sula can be refuted in the fact that there are many occasions when the sense of trust was broken, even though it can also be proven in the characters non-stopped attempt to be there for one another that there was some kind of assurance. In Toni Morrison’s Sula, the representation of a struggling young woman who symbolized more than what she was credited for was created. Her life had not been like most coming of age women. She endured the death of her mother up close and personal, continued to be criticized and unpleased by her community, and soon fluctuated towards her own death. Through this, Toni Morrison focused on the unjust relationships within the novel that pointed back to the antagonist, Sula.
