First Nations Development Institute to Award $6,000 a Year in Scholarships
If Native Americans were to regain control over their local food systems, they might eliminate food insecurity in rural Native communities and reservations. They could produce more food while improving health and nutrition. A college education is essential to effective management of food systems, but many Native American students can't afford college and university tuition. They need help from grants and scholarships.
That is why First Nations Development Institute (FNDI) will award six $1,000 scholarships every year to Native American college and university students majoring agriculture. Qualifying fields of study include: agriculture, agribusiness management, agriscience technologies, agronomy, animal husbandry, aquaponics, fisheries and wildlife, food production and safety, food-related policy and legislation, horticulture, irrigation science, plant-based nutrition, and sustainable agriculture or food systems.
A student also must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate a commitment to reclaiming control of the local food system in his or her Native community. They must also be able to provide documentation proving that they are an enrolled member of a current or terminated federal or state tribe.
