What role does casino gambling play in Native American society? Is this an example of assimilation or a solution to poverty on reservations? Explain and ground your answer using statistical data or published research.
Morality is relative to the norms of one's culture, which is, whether an action is right or wrong depends on the moral norms of the society in which it is practiced. The same action may be morally right in one society but be morally wrong in another. Many feel that morality is what society as a culture decides it should be, based on certain values and norms that the society we live in feels that is suitable. The Native American societies according to federal law are sovereign territory under federal law, which means in general that states cannot enforce their civil statues on the reservation, which are inside the borders of the particular state ("Native American Casinos," n.d., para. 2) In the 1980’s in the state of Florida, Native American societies began to open bingo and gambling salons as a way to generate revenue-earning millions of dollars annually. During this period there was numerous budget cuts that affected the Native American societies, and the revenues that were generated by the bingo and gambling salons, were a main source of revenue throughout the 1980’s (Hewitt & Beaucar, n.d.).
To regulate the issues that arose with the Native American societies, the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was formed and passed in 1988 to explain the laws surrounding the gaming houses. The following is the policy as it relates the act ("Indian Gaming Regulation," 1994, Chapter
