The Chinook Indians were a tribe of Native Americans who lived in the Pacific Northwest. They lived along the coast of what is now Oregon and Washington State. The men used bow and arrows for hunting elk, deer and sea mammals. The women gathered other food such as shellfish, clams, roots and berries. The Chinook were very skilled traders.

After reading Native Americans and the “Middle Ground,” I realized how narratives of historians are quick to shame and blame Native Americans in history. This article begins by revealing how European settlement presented the Indians as obstacles. Recent historians, such as Gary Nash, show the Native Americans as being conquered by the Europeans. Author of The Middle Ground, Richard White, seems to be one of the first to examine the culture of Native Americans and the relationship between colonists. White writes about the “middle ground” of the politics and trade that is eventually established.

On page 30, Salisbury explains the fur trade between the northern Native Americans and the Europeans that was very profitable for both sides. He notes that Native Americans were not forced to be a part of the trade, but the beneficial aspects of it incited them to engage with the Europeans. Merrell discusses the struggles that Natives faced when colonists forced them out of their homelands. The emotional effects of having to get up and move were equally as bad as the physical challenges of having to migrate to a new home and find new hunting and gathering grounds. Salisbury presents the diverse native societies encountered by the Europeans.
The relationship between the United States and the Native American tribes has never been a supportive one, challenging at best. In the past 200 years the relationship between the two has put pressure on Congress’ claim of a world power over tribes and tribal nation’s natural sovereignty, one that is even older than that of the United States of America. This tension, which comes from a sense of where the status of the Tribe fits into the United States Constitution, is creating a slippery slope for the Native American people. But in the book, the biggest question Pommersheim raises in the introduction is: can the modern Indian people escape their federally forced dependence, to become truly self-defining?
Abstract We love to hear stories told by our parents, grandparents, family, and friends, but for the Oyate, stories told by their ancestors are how they know and understand creation and how they came to be. Stories of creation, battles, tradition and so on have been passed down from generation to generation and are still being shared today. The Lakota people did not have a written language but they did use shapes and images to translate stories the best they could. That is why they heavily relied on the oral stories that were shared in the Lakota history videos and Lakota Ehanni Stories. Oral Teachings
During this time period, Native Americans were being treated so poorly. They were very misunderstood, and white men didn 't even try to understand them. All they cared about was forcing the Indians off of "their" land. This is unfair in so many ways. One being that the Natives were actually there first.
Native American Research: Chief Pontiac Intro Chief Pontiac is a Native American that is important to the United States’ history. He was a part of the Ottawa tribe and led the American Indians to a revolution also known as the Pontiac War or Pontiac’s Rebellion, which was against the British when they first came to America. He wasn’t afraid to die for his rights. He believed that they all had rights to live in America and to live how they wanted to live. I chose him for my Native American Research because he was a courageous Native American hero.
Whites did not attempt to exceed the Mississippi river to the West Coast as they considered it as an Indian country. After 1850 American settlers started preparing to displace the Native Americans from tribal lands. Plains were very resistant and hostile to any whites trying to acquire their groups of land and searching grounds. The policy of the federal government was to mend social group boundaries and to sign agreements promising to respect Indian social group. What was missing from this policy was the lack of understanding and insight into Native cultures.
Navajo Tribe The Navajo tribe was one the tribes in the southwest areas in North America. The tribal origin was the Southern Athabascan (McGary). The tribe had many names that it went by such as; Navaho, Diné, and then Navajo which means “the people” (McGary). The tribe had many home territories in the southwestern region.
The cherokee tribe is a big nation with many ancestors who have known their culture and legends for decades. Who they also have been passing on their cultures and myths. The Cherokee tribe have many cultures. They have six traditional festivals throughout the year.
The Cherokee Indians never lived in tipis, they lived in permanent houses. In the winter, they lived in houses of woven saplings, plastered with mud and the roof was made of bark. In the summer, they lived in open- air dwellings and the roof was made out of bark. Cherokee women wore tear dresses, styled from a calico print material with an applique diamond pattern around the skirt.
Native American Apache Tribe One’s culture, beliefs, traditions, food, dances, and many other things make people who they are. Everyone is different and believes in different things which make them unique. People’s actions and beliefs are different and have their own special characteristics in life that make them different from everyone else. There is one special culture that really grabs my attention because of how different and unique they are.
Throughout the history of the United States, there generally have been dozens of particularly social movements, which is fairly significant. From the African American Civil Rights Movement in 1954 to the feminism movement in 1920, protests for all intents and purposes have helped these groups basically earn rights and fight injustice in a really major way.
