Beak Lab Analysis Charles Darwin , a naturalist, discovered and stated that organisms arise and grow and develop through the natural selection. Natural selection is the process in which nearby organisms well adapted to the environment to survive and to produce offspring. In class we did a lab where we studied the amounts of food birds get with their different sizes of beaks. For an example, we use a spoon to represent a larger beak I found that it was harder to pick the food.
Paragraph 1: Introduction - explain your lab. The lab that I chose to do was the “McGraw Hill Higher Education: Natural Selection - Virtual Lab.” I chose this lab because it was the one that most interested me, as I liked the format of the virtual lab. In this lab, I was able to manipulate both the environment and the allele frequency in order to record and investigate the generational breeding patterns of a group of organisms.
Summary: In the book of Shrinking the Cat by Sue Hubbell, the author examines the concept of genetic engineering and argues how genetic engineering is nothing new by providing examples of humans altering genetically the species of cats, corn, apples, and silkworms. The introduction of this book discusses the fact that humans put themselves at the top of lists of the smartest animals. Yet in this case, these lists are hardly objective because they are created by humans. The author provides the example of her very own beloved dog, Tazzie, in the situation of how Tazzie is capable of finding a bone every single time they visit the park.

Summary: Chapter One The most consistent aspect about life is that change is always occurring; it is the one thing that we can count on. This seems to be the main theme throughout chapter one. The Chapter opens up with a story about the 2011 earthquake that caused catastrophic damage to Japan and makes the point that when something dramatic occurs in nature, we often tend to think of it as a momentary lapse of normalcy within the environment and that things will go back to their normal stable stage.
After suffering a drought for many years, the settlers in the middle east found a way how to survive in this environment. They began by harvesting and gathering cereal plants like barley and wheat, these plant would grow in abundance and could be stored, the accessibility to these cereal plants would have a profound impact in our history. They would farm barley and wheat close to their villages and make them settle in villages, barley and wheat is very nutritionist and gave the village the nutrition they needed. These innovative farmers were changing the nature of the crops without realizing it selecting the most profitable seeds of barley and wheat to plant, controlling nature and changing the crops by domestication. Now scientist selects fruits genes to modify them to be ever more useful to humans.
The Call of the Wild, by Jack London does relate to Darwin’s theory of natural selection and that only the fittest survive. The theme is that you must adjust and be strong in order to survive. Life will not always be easy and you never know when your circumstances and living conditions will change. In The Call of the Wild, Buck is first living with a judge on a plush plantation.
Continuing the approach of natural selection, Darwin briefly summarizes the concept of sexual selection, which is a distinct aspect in species evolution. Having offspring is the key to a species continuation to exist, male entities with variations that allow them to get the attention of females are more likely to have mate and obtain more offspring than others. These beneficial carnal characteristics are also diversifications that would be passed onto the next generation. Darwin gives examples of approaches that species of male aviaries use to attract females: singing to their potential mates, displaying various brightly colored feathers, and performing shenanigans to attract attention. Imagine what would happen if we lived in a world where water was kept 8 feet off the ground and there was absolutely no way you could get it if you weren’t tall enough. Most likely, the short people would die off. The taller ones would multiply, and before long, instead of a population of people of all sizes, you would have a population of only tall people. Living things that are best suited, or adapted, to their environment survive and multiply. Those that are not, are unable to survive.
In Origin of Species, Darwin emphasizes the importance of ordinary selection – the battle for life based on environmental hardships governed by nature– on the development of species. He then establishes the idea of sexual selection – the struggle for the organism to reproduce generally governed by the female – which generally produces traits that ordinary selection would not develop. Darwin’s greatest concerned was with why there so many different types of species in the world. According to Raymond Scupin and Christopher R.DeCorse, Natural Selection can be defined as nature deciding which specie shall survive and which gene shall be passed on from parent to offspring. Many people believe that humans evolved from evolution and the process of natural selection. In 1859 Charles Darwin published his theory of Evolution that states that the characteristics of a species evolve and change over time. The theory of Evolution also states that all species are related. I both agree and disagree with certain components of the theory of Evolution . I believe that humans and other species can change over time by the process of natural selection, but I do not believe that humans that all species are related.
A disadvantage of artificial selection is stated on, “Lee County Students”, saying that “However, genetic modification is highly controversial.” This is a disadvantage because artificial selection is not fully proven to work, and there are not many studies that show it works easily. Another disadvantage of artificial selection is an unexpected result. There are many different outcomes of artificial selection and can be a surprise to the organism and owner, stated on “Pros and Cons of Artificial Selection”. A final disadvantage of artificial selection is shortened life.

Genetic engineering is the modification of an organism’s genetic composition by artificial means, often involving the transfer of specific traits, or genes, from one organism into a plant or animal of an entirely different species. Human beings ought to consider the pros and cons of genetic engineering before using it. It is a contentious topic because people have different views of weather genetic engineering is safe or not.
