World War 1 is considered to be one of the most brutal and bloodiest wars in history. One of the main contributors to World War 1 being so brutal was the stalemate and the trenches. Although it is said that the warfare in World War 1 was outdated and old, it was the outdated war tactics that caused the stalemate and the millions of lives lost. Throughout World War 1, there were several technological advancements. Technology was the most important characteristic of the WW1 era because Naval advancements, the introduction of air warfare, and advanced ground warfare. When World War 1 began, the British navy was significantly more powerful than the German navy. The British not only has bigger and more powerful vessels, but the Allied Powers had formed a blockade around Germany blocking off essential supplies for the Central Powers. The Germans knew that this would be an obstacle, so they invented the U-boats, also known as submarines. This made the German Navy almost unstoppable because they were stealthy, hard to defend, and there were no warning signs that an attack from a U-boat was coming. Planes were used for spying as well as dropping bombs. This was very useful because both sides could attack without the fear of being shelled, such as trench warfare. The Zeppelin, a German blimp, was used to drop bombs as well. The Zeppelin caused great terror, but wasn’t a huge threat. Along with planes, air traffic control was first implemented and planes were able to takeoff from navy vessels.
