The tannery in Nectar in a Sieve is like an evil villain in a Disney movie. Villains on the outside, are friendly, harmless individuals, but on the inside, they are truly cold-hearted and cruel. The author, Kamala Markandaya, writes about how the tannery begins as a welcoming place, but later on, it is quite the opposite for the main character’s family. In the book Nectar in a Sieve, the most significant conflict involves Rukmani’s family and the tannery.
Initially the tannery is a positive place of business. It offered paying jobs to many in the village. When Arjun, Rukmani and Nathan’s eldest son, says he wants to work at the tannery to help earn money for the family, Rukmani is hesitant because she thought he is too young to start working.

After taking the treacherous journey, they arrive with the help of a young boy named Puli. When they reach the gate at the entrance of the house, they see a female doctor that tells them that Murugan used to work there but he left two years ago. Luckily, the doctor is affable and let them spend the night there because she saw how worn-out there are. The next day, she tells them that Murugan lives at the Collector’ house on Chamundi Street. When they arrive, peons told them, they didn’t allow beggars, which they are not. When Nathan tells them they are looking for Murugan, they lead them to his wife apprehensivly. After Nathan and Rukmani tell Murugan’s wife, Ammu that they are looking for their son, Ammu suddenly becomes nervous like a cheetah (Cheetahs are going extinct because many are too nervous to breed) because her husband left her two years ago and she doesn’t have enough food or space for them to stay. After the find out the news about Murugan, Rukmani and Nathan decide to go back to their village because they have no place else to stay. Throughout Kamala Markandaya’s book, the most significant conflict is between Rukmani’s family and the
