Does your parent or older sibling that can drive, focus on the road or no? Many people think that distracted driving is not that bad of a problem, but it is worse than people think. Distracted driving means that a person is doing something that is getting their attention off the road. According to the article NHTSA in 2015 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 people were injured, just from distracted driving. That is like 300 more people died in 2015 then in 2014. If we lose that many people each year from just distracted driving, then in 3 years we will be losing three times that amount in 2018! People may say that the only effect that can happen are death or get injured from distracted driving, well that is wrong. The effects can cause many different things such as death, injury, emotion, health and other more. However, there are three main types of distraction while driving, Manual, Visual, and Cognitive. A manual distraction is when they don’t keep their hands on the wheels, but they do other things with their hands instead of driving, like eating your breakfast. Visual distraction is when they are not focusing on the road and they are looking at something else that is not the road, like a car accident. Finally a Cognitive distraction is when their mind is wandering off and not paying any attention to the road, like they are spaced out. According to the article It Still Works they say that “According to Distracted Driving.gov, more than 3,000 people were killed in accidents involving a distracted driver in 2010; another 416,000 were injured.” This shows that in one year at least more than 3,000 people died from accidents, from distracted driving that is more than the whole Konawaena Middle School plus the High School Students. There are also people that can get involved in distracted driving like the person that got crashed and got injured or passed away, which can affect the family of that person or it could be the person that crashed that passed away. If each person does something even if its a little thing it can be spread to millions of people, like a tree growing branches and leaves. Being a model of not being distracted while driving. Spreading the word, the danger of distracted driving to everyone. Holding up signs to stop distracted driving. Pledging to never be a distracted driver or being distracted while driving. When you are in the car with a distracted driver you won’t be a bystander. Learning the danger of distracted driving from parents, cops, special organization that is in charge of those things, or from us. Putting things that will make you distracted somewhere else like your phone, snacks and other item in the back or your bag and zip it up. If you have other passenger like guest, parents, kids or other passenger get what they want or might need. Like water, some snack, a toy for your kid or magazines, something that won’t distracted you while you or other person is driving. If your parent or you gets a call from someone answer instead of the person that is driving, so they won’t be distracted, tell them that they are driving and can’t answer the phone so please call them later or something like that. Finally the most important one is to FOCUS ON THE ROAD NO MATTER WHAT, if you have to do something that is super important PULL OVER PEOPLE!!!
