Expository Essay: PC Culture is Negatively Affecting American Society Our english language has become fettered by the political ideology that we call political correctness. It affects all American in our everyday life; we do not speak that way we wish without being verbally scourged for a word that offends a few people. Our founding fathers came to this country trying to achieve freedom of religion and freedom of speech, but still, that freedom continues to elude us. Why? If we continue to allow the voices of the sensitive to drown out the voices of the American people, we can expect a number of negative consequences. The political correctness “bandwagon” has seriously affected business and politics iin America. Political correctness has created a serious division in the workplace; processing and work has been diluted to ensure that nothing is going to offend the other co-workers: “Everything has to be filtered to ensure no one is offended or gets into trouble. That slows down information processing, waters down communication, strips out critical data, and dilutes meaning” (Tobak). Political correctness has destroyed the defining factor that helped drive a workspace. Political diversity allows for employees to express many of their political views and allows for a less hostile and more cohesive work environment. Political officials have also been attacked for saying words that have similar dictation to more offensive words. In 1999, David Howard, who was a white aide to Anthony A. William, the african-american mayor of Washington D. C. , was speaking about a
