Negative Effects Of Video Games

709 Words3 Pages
“Contrary to the traditional belief that gaming is merely an addictive source of entertainment and diversion, recent research has proved that gaming has numerous benefits and key among them, is the development of cognitive skills in both children and adults” (Engenio). The shift in perception of gaming has changed from a negative view to that of a more positive outlook based on this research. Video games are sharpening vital life skills for the players. A majority of frequent gamers tend to develop similar characteristics such as a fierce competitive drive, highly advanced analytical thinking skills, and quick reaction times. As gamers engage in additional games their competitive drive increases. The players who participate in more strenuous games tend to have an increased need to win. In a society where winners are seen as resilient “winning also leads to esteem of others and increasing social status” (Straker). Winning causes others to look up to, or idolize those standing in victory lane. With multiplayer games becoming the trend, gamers are extremely competitive. Science shows that “victorious gamers enjoy a surge of testosterone” (Callaway). Elevated levels of testosterone are associated with sensations such as confidence, ambition, and strength. Videos game wins increase the “manly,” “alpha,” or dominate feelings of the player, even if the player is female. Although the competitive drive increases with winning that is not the only side effect of these games.
