NeighborWorks Financial Management Support Initiative - Pilot
Internal Consulting Group
During the middle 1990s NeighborWorks® America identified NWO financial management systems as a priority risk issue affecting organizational sustainability. To assist network organizations build and strengthen internal capacity in this area, from fiscal year 1994 through fiscal year 1998, NeighborWorks America® employed a team of subject matter experts /consultants to be technical assistance providers to the network organizations. Typically the internal consulting group was contracted by the districts to go onsite and provide a specific financial service solution based upon the need of the network member and district office. Often times it was discovered within a year an organization receiving NeighborWorks America® technical assistance continued to experience deficiencies applicable to financial systems. There are number of reasons for this occurrence. Although the Internal Consulting Group was very successful for the short term and it was a proactive move by NeighborWorks America® to get in front of an emerging issue, in hindsight it is very clear that NeighborWorks America® as a funder taking ownership of a specific NWO solution without fully engaging, training staff or having a support system for the work to continue after completion of the project was not long term capacity …show more content…

This initiative is supported by several national studies that suggests sustained efforts to create changes in financial management can be effective in achieving lasting organizational improvements. These same studies emphasizes that in order to create lasting changes in administrative infra-structures, organizations may need to work consistently for several years on strengthening their financial management systems & processes. This initiative propose that Neighborworks® America launch a pilot financial management support program that connect Neighborworks ®Organizations with deficiencies in financial management with local preferred one stop financial accounting firms, providing comprehensive accounting, CFO, and advisory services.
