Neil Armstrong is a man who changed the world due to his bravery and courage in the space race to the moon. He went from a boy growing up in a small town in Ohio to one of the most influential Americans not only in the USA, but in the world as well. He led the Apollo 11 expedition during the sixties in order to defeat the Soviets in the previously mentioned space race. Because of this he received numerous awards and medals for his service to his country and to the world. Neil Armstrong is a man of many great virtues and should be awarded the Person of the Year Award (POTY). As previously mentioned, Neil Armstrong is grew up in Wapakoneta, Ohio, and was born in August 5. He served in the Korean War and went to college at Purdue University. Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1955 after serving as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952. He married Janet Shearon on January 28, 1956 and eventually had three children. As can be seen by these facts, Neil Armstrong comes from humble beginnings and had a ideal family life. Neil Armstrong was selected as an astronaut in 1962. He was part of the second group of astronauts ever chosen. After a failed first attempt on the Gemini spacecraft, he was still allowed to lead the Apollo 11 expedition. Him and two others, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, went into space with mindset of becoming the first people to set foot on the moon. While Michael stayed in orbit, Aldrin and Armstrong set a voyage to make history. On July 16, 1969, Armstrong took the first step on the moon's surface, saying the immortal words, "That's one small step for (a) man; one giant leap for mankind."
