The novel “Coraline” follows the life of a young girl who navigates her way into her new house as well as the community around it. There are several themes developed throughout the novel such as; family, fear, courage, dissatisfaction, as well as the importance of decision making. Neil Gaiman does an incredible job of symbolizing these themes as well as interpreting them within the story through the use of vivid lessons that Coraline learned. When Coraline and her family first move into their new victorian style house, her parents tend to ignore her due to their bustling lives with work. Her being left alone, led to her entertaining herself as well as discovering new things within the area. She discovers in an alternate universe a different set of parents who offer her plenty of attention and cook her mouthwatering meals. Although, this newfound life seems perfect, Coraline quickly discovers their evil intentions of taking her soul. She comes to the conclusion that her original parents may have flaws, but they are still her parents. Her love for her family encourages her to fight to get them back from the evil alternate mother. She was able to overcome her fear through giving herself pep talks as well as reminding herself constantly that she is brave and that she cannot give up. Other characters in the book are also helped by Coraline to manage their fear through her personal experiences and comfort. When she starts at her new school the fear of being new does not compare to her venture in the other world. She explains that by doing something that makes you scared is what makes you brave.
