The primary goal of this project is identifying, comparing and contrasting one traditional gang and one neo-traditional gang. In this case, 42 gangs of Chicago and The Gangs of Miami-Dade County were studies as a traditional and neo-traditional gang. This discussion therefore shows their structure. Through this, duration by which each gang has been in operational is discussed. Duration is a key determinant on a gang structure. Number of members including their age is discussed. This is also a key determinant in a gang structure. A comparison of both gang in regards to where each gang is situated has also been put into perspective.

One of the most read about being 42 gangs of Chicago. Gangs are of different types. In most cases, they are characterized by diverse criteria which are typical in distinguishing them. One such criteria is their structural features which shows level of organization (Klein & Maxson, 2001). Organization of a gang include rules, number of members, leadership roles and meetings among others. The second one include the level of aggression. This shows the level of violent crime the gang is involved in such as homicide, physical harm, robbery and use of aggravated assault among others (Klein & Maxson, 2010). Membership of the gangs according to Short & Hughes 2006 is also important in their comparison. This include gender, number as well as age. A good example is The Gangs of Miami-Dade County which has been in the rise since 90s (Klein & Maxson, 2010). In some instances, they are similar to traditional gangs. However, they have not been in operation for a long time. In most cases, they might have been in operation for less than ten years according to Klein & Maxson 2010. The membership is relatively lower as compared to the tradition gang. The number of members ranges from fifty to hundred or around that figure (Howell, 2012). Some of the groups may have subgroups depending on age and area while others don’t. Some of their members are very young as compared to the youngest in tradition type.
