Heroin(e) is a 2017 Netflix documentary produced by Elaine McMillion Sheldon which presents the opioid crisis and its effects on the community of Huntington, West Virginia through the progressive perspectives of Jan Rader, Judge Patricia Keller and Necia Freeman. Due to Raders experience and outstanding service in the community of Huntington, West Virginia she is awarded the position of Chief Firefighter, within the speech she is seen through a close up shot having softened facial expressions and become teary eyed as she begins to close her speech (put more evidence here ). Rader's decision to highlight Mickey in her speech reflects her empathetic approach to leadership and works to demonstrate her commitment to understand and support individuals like Mickey. Not only does it work to shift the focus away from seeing Mickey as solely someone who has a past dealing with addiction, but instead portrays him as someone who deserves recognition for his positive impact on Rader, even though she is in a position of authority. The speech not only further emphasises the respect Jan Rader shows to those she attends and helps, but works to show how compassion and humanising those who need help can work to solve the problem and stigma around addiction while simultaneously challenging stereotypes and encouraging others to see addicts as individuals with their own personal worth.
