In 1986, world renowned professor and author Ellie Weisel was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. At the ceremony he had a very inspiring speech to share with the world. In this speech he makes two strong statements toward the end, regarding neutrality and silence. Those are the main topics we will be discussing. Ellie Weisel is a survivor of the Holocaust, and a former prisoner of the death camp Auschwitz as well as Buchenwald. Sadly when he entered he was only fifteen years old. He endured many hardships but soldiered on that is what makes him a great man. “Neutrality helps the oppressor never the victim Silence encourages the tormentor never the tormented.” That is one of Ellie’s quotes in his speech. An example when most people see a Muslim they would almost automatically assume he is a terrorist. Not only is this very wrong but it is also a violation as your rights as a human being. No one should be persecuted because of their political views religion or race. Everyone is entitled to their own life what they do with it is their decision. How many times have you seen someone walk right past a homeless or poor man as if they didn’t even exist. Overall the point I’m trying to get across is even today people are persecuted for things completely out of their control. Don’t be silent voice your opinion don’t keep your mouth shut! Don’t worry Ellie is still alive and healthy. He is currently 88 years old and still believes in all of his ideals. We have talked about why neutrality is bad. We have also talked about why silence is bad. We even discussed how ellie’s brilliant ideas are still true and relevant in current times.
