Being concerned about protecting the things you love are the natural instincts of mankind. We live in a world of ultimate control and have all experienced the unannounced spontaneous events that life throws just to prove we are not in control of everything. Alas, we should never feel the fear of not being in control and the inability to protect our loved ones. The “Never” State Farm commercial uses this feeling to convince families to buy their insurance to protect their values in everyday life. The State Farm Insurance commercial begins with an eligible bachelor that states he is never getting married. The commercial then jumps forward in time where the man is purchasing a ring for his future wife. The author which was, State Farm insurance, is trying to represent themselves as a true supporter of the American family and the lifestyle that encompasses that image. Logos, or the logic of the commercial, was obvious in the repetitiveness of the word, never. The hidden meaning is the logic that in life there are situations and events that are beyond our control, which we find ourselves thinking will never happen to us. State Farm was stating that they can help protect what one might value with the insurance they provide. When the young couple decides to have children it then leads to buying a new house and car. To keep ones family safe means you must protect those items. The use of pathos, or emotion, was evident in the image of the average family, thus targeting the family audience. The use of this image was successful by the last scene where there was peace and quiet, and the main character realized how much he valued his family.
