The first topic I am interested in is the new dietary guidelines. Although the National Restaurant Association (NRA) is all for the suggested guidelines, there are many groups against the new guidelines. I thought at first I would be all for the guidelines, to my surprise after reading a little of the information given from the both sides I am against them. Some experts are saying we need to worry about the environment as well when we are forcing these regulations on so many groups. Not just restaurants are affected by these guidelines, school cafeterias are also made to follow these rules as well. It is supposed to benefit the salaried employees. Although I am not a salaried employee right now, I may become in the future and this may affect that. The NRA is against it because they feel it will harm more employees than it will help. They fear those that have worked so hard to become a salaried employee may be forced to go back to an hourly wage. Other lawmakers are also in the fight against the new regulation. They believe the DOL did not take into consideration the major impact this new law will cause. If this is passed there may be a major difference in the way restaurants employees are paid. I am against the proposal. It takes hard work and dedication most of the time to move up in a business. To have that privilege taken away and must go back to an hourly wage would be devastating. The reason I find this topic interesting is because I wanted a salaried job. I am going to college to be able to get to the next step in my company. As I mentioned it is not only restaurants that are affected by these guidelines. All those serving food are required to follow these laws. I may also want to extend it to consumers as well. I am asked a lot why their favorite item is no longer on the menu, it may be an item that did not meet the desired criteria and could no longer be placed on the menu. I’m not saying that is why every time but it is quite possible that with the new regulations it has caused some of our favorite items to be discontinued. I feel it is important to be healthy but we also need to have the environment to survive. The new proposal is more plant based. This is great for farmers in that their produce will be bought, but what happens when unforeseen weather conditions cause issues for their crops. Did they consider droughts, floods, and snowstorms? Some workers had a delay on their checks and mail due to bad weather. Will the restaurants be penalized for not having the items needed if they are unable to get the produce needed? I am more interested in this topic because it affects me now. The menu at my job changes every six months. I find it interesting to see what regulations may be the cause for certain changes that have been occurring. I am also a consumer. I eat out from time to time, so this subject concerns me in many
