The Middle Ages was a time of great suffering, including famine and massive spreads of illness. However, the Renaissance was a revival of art, learning, and literature. Politicians during the Renaissance displayed far different attributes from their predecessors in the Middle Ages. In The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, he discusses the characteristics of a successful politician (the prince) in the Renaissance. Machiavelli mentions how a Prince must be as a “lion and fox”.
