The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli has been passed down for generations to great rulers to inspire and guide them through their leadership years. Throughout The Prince there are many valuable lessons rulers from all time periods can use. Machiavelli advises rulers on how to handle new conquered territories. There are many sections in the book that help a ruler gage if he/she is a good or poor ruler. With the knowledge given throughout The Prince current and future commanders will hopefully be more effective at leading their countries. One of the most interesting ideas is that a ruler should consider being rapacious instead of kind and gentle. Machiavelli feels that a leader that is overly kind shows weakness. When a ruler is cruel, greedy, or strong it shows that he/she means business and should not be antagonized by citizen or other countries. Niccolo Machiavelli strongly believed the leader should surround him with great men that he trusts. Through this the prince has guidance while making important decisions. Machiavelli said “ they can trust each other, but when it is otherwise, the end will always be disastrous for either one or the other” (72). This is stating that the trust and respect between the prince and his advisor must be reliable. If the advisor thinks of him first he is not fit for the job. A true advisor should think of the leader and the countries need first “he who has the state of another in his hands ought never to think of himself, but always of his prince” (71).
