Both Nick and Amy lied to each other a lot, but Nick was a very frequent and adept liar. The second the police showed up following Amy’s disappearance, Nick lied to them. “Although his temper does rage at times, he has a charming smile” (Maslin). That deceiving smile wasn’t always around at the right times. He willingly smiled at the cameras while being questioned by the media about his lost wife. He also had a whole other secret life away from Amy with Andie, the mistress. Although Amy seemed to the crazy one of the two, Nick was seemingly more unstable than Amy. Nick thought he had everything figured out, how to play the case out to make sure he didn’t appear guilty. He watched plenty of crime shows to know, “Only the guilty guys lawyer up” (Flynn 67). “He very openly battles with his identity, questioning what makes a good man” (Scherer). One defining characteristic in the contrary of him being a good man, he was a cheater. He had a mistress, Andie, who was young, new, exciting, and his student. Andie was not revealed early on in the novel, it was made sure that Nick looked like a poor innocent guy who lost the love of his life. Nick cheated on Amy with Andie for a long time, and he didn’t even know that she knew. One day, Amy decided to surprise him at his bar, but she got a surprise herself, she saw Nick get in a car with Andie. Amy followed them to Andie’s house. Of course, Nick was too oblivious to notice. He wanted a divorce, but he didn’t want to be the one to initiate it. He assumed that Amy would take charge at some point and ask for the divorce. Then, he would get to be the good guy. Even when Amy went missing, Nick doesn’t call the affair off. Instead, he tells her to keep quiet, ”Don’t say anything, sit tight, don’t say anything till we talk (Flynn 143).
