How important is Nick Carraway to the story of The Great Gatsby?

Despite the title of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1926 novel and Baz Luhrmann’s 2014 film adaption The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is not the story’s main focus. The text focuses upon protagonist Nick Carraway’s first person narration of his 1992 summer in West Egg, Long Island. Jay Gatsby, Nick’s neighbour, is examined observationally and objectively through Nick’s perspective and experiences. The novel and film both mainly use the character of Nick to demonstrate how freely the other characters present their corrupt persona, without even trying to hide it, showing his importance to the text.
