I have chosen a picture of the celebrity Nicki Minaj and this essay will investigate the codes, conventions, signs, ideology and discourse of her image. I will analyse her dress code and the meanings behind her choice of outfit.

The codes and conventions are the visual cues of dress code and the codes communicate meaning behind what is worn. This also shows what kind of message Nicki Minaj is portraying and what her clothes symbolise (O’ Shaughnessy and Stadler 2008:31). Clothes tell us about who you are they are not just there for comfort according to O’Shaughnessy and Stadler (2008:31) clothes also depict a certain message about someone. Nicki is trying to show she is strong by wearing bright and flamboyant colours in her outfit.

In other words putting forward a point of view as Nicki Minaj is doing in this picture. She is putting herself forward to be judged by others yet she doesn’t care because she has a smile on her face that shows she is happy with how she looks and she is confident with herself. She has a large rear but she doesn’t care she flaunts it by wearing tight blue and white skinny jeans. This shows she is fashionable and keeping up with the trends of the world. These pants are complimentary to her figure and they make her look very sophisticated. Even though these pants are very tight she is showing she is a real woman and she has a body that should be admired. She is portraying a good image to young girls as they should be happy with their bodies and not try fit in with what society
