What does it mean to be human? To be human allows us to think, act, and know who we are as a person. This is important because this is a key factor in humans, behavior, well-being, and even health. Being a human can involve dealing with our feelings, mistakes, and regrets, unlike other things like machines, or devices. In the book “Night” by Eli Weisel, the book shows how the German soldiers don’t treat Jews like humans and even take away some of their humanity. This book is great for learning and getting more information about the Holocaust. The Jews stopped feeling human when they constantly watched other people die, were getting abused and beaten, and they lost their real name and were assigned a number instead. This would make them feel like they would have to act in a certain way so they could avoid being killed. But most of the Jews would get killed for an unnecessary reason. “Never shall I [Eli] forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky” (Wiesel 34). This quote shows how Eli was very traumatized and frightened seeing peoples lives getting wasted and destroyed. Seeing these types of things often makes them feel unhuman because they would later think that their lives aren’t meant to live, but in reality their lives did matter. Most of the Jews and Eli would get beaten all the time for the worst unnecessary things. For example, they would get abused for not having enough energy to work or do something, but in reality they were being starved so they did not have any energy to begin with. In this quote, “He threw himself on me like a wild beast, beating me in the chest, on my head, throwing me to the ground and picking me up again” (Weisel 53). This was described when Eli just walked past one of the Kapos offices, and got beaten for invading privacy and interrupting him even though he did not say a word or barely looked at the
