This book was first published in 1989 by Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel is a jewish writer who
was born in 1928 in Sighetu Marmației, Transylvania, which is apart of Romania. Him and his
family were deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz in which him and his two older sisters survived.
At first I was selecting a book to get it over with, but after I’ve read the story I started to take
interest in it.
This book focuses on a man named Elhanan Rosenbaum, survivor of the holocaust, and
his son Malkiel Rosenbaum. Elhanan Rosenbaum is a survivor of the Holocaust, which he met
his wife, Talia, who died giving birth to their child, Malkiel Rosenbaum. Elhanan suffers from a

This book’s time occurred during the Holocaust era when the Nazis were in power.
This books really doesn’t offers any more insights about the holocaust that I didn’t know as this
book revolved around Elhanan Rosenbaum and his son visiting his village. Three quotes that
I’ve found unique or interesting were, “What does it matters? Only memory matters. Mine sometimes overflows. Because it harbors my father’s memories, too, since his mind has
became a sieve”, “If I am not, I am nothing”, and a quote that came from Chicago Tribune that
wasn’t in the book but appeared on the back of the book, “A book of shattering force that offers
a message of urgency to a world under the spell of tyranny of amnesia”.
The first quote was unique to me because I can understand where he’s coming from when
he say “Only memory matters..” because I adore my good and bad memories because they have a
