In the book Night, by Elie Wiesel, there was a very strong shift in the tone just within the first three chapters. “The shopkeepers were doing good business, the students lived among their books, and the children played in the streets”(Weisel 6). It is shown here that they were living ordinary, peaceful lives. “The shadows around me roused themselves as if from a deep sleep and left silently in every direction”(Weisel 14). This is where people began to no longer feel peaceful and began the long journey of fear and worry that would get worse throughout the book.
Every story written has a tone that is put into the story by the author. Tone is the attitude of the author toward the subject, or the audience. In the book “Night,” tone is something that is present all throughout the story, especially so in chapter five. Here are some of the most prevalent ones that are in this story. One of the biggest tones in this chapter was the feeling of fear.
Death was the best thing that could have happened to Elie WIesel. In his book, night, he has to overcome some of the most gruesome experiences ever read about, and it’s a true story. He had to get over working in terrible conditions, get over losing his family, and forget his future as his faith was lost. To start off, Elie had to get over the unbearable dilemma of losing multiple members of his family. It is unimaginable to lose any family members in such a horrid way, but that was only one of the barriers he had to face.
Elie Wiesel’s “Night” depicts death, obliteration, and anguish while directly depicting the suffering he witnessed during his time at Auschwitz, a concentration camp for Jews during World War II. Within the story, there is an overwhelming amount of times the Jews had been in distress. Many children had been separated from their parents and all of the Jews were taken from their homes. Their suffering seemed endless. They were no longer teachers, homeowners, or priests.
When Elie Wiesel was liberated from the Buchenwald concentration camp in April 1945, he decided to wait for ten years before writing his memoirs of the Holocaust. Night is the story of Elie Wiesel surviving Nazi concentration camps as a teenager. The original Yiddish publication of Night was 900 pages and titled And the World Remained Silent. Despite low sales originally, Night has now been translated into thirty languages and has become a classic. In the book Night, the character that contradicts Elie’s resilient attitude is his father when he loses the motivation to survive while Elie has the motivation to survive, the lesson to be learned through these two characters would be the importance of family.
The author of the Night did not understand why God punishes the innocent and righteous, who worship Him, even in the death camp, what did they do? They pray for you! Glorify your name. Wiesel openly expressed his hatred for God, was not afraid. He thought that after what happened in Auschwitz, the religious dimension of Jewish identity completely lost its meaning.
In the novel, “Night” Elie Wiesel communicates with the readers his thoughts and experiences during the Holocaust. Wiesel describes his fight for survival and journey questioning god’s justice, wanting an answer to why he would allow all these deaths to occur. His first time subjected into the concentration camp he felt fear, and was warned about the chimneys where the bodies were burned and turned into ashes. Despite being warned by an inmate about Auschwitz he stayed optimistic telling himself a human can’t possibly be that cruel to another human.
At what point does respect no longer matter? When does the need for survival take over grief? When do the tears dry up in order to stay alive?
From the beginning, Elie Wiesel 's work details the beginning of his adult life by focussing on his awareness of Judaism, its history, and its significance to the religion. Despite warnings about German intentions towards Jews, Eliezer’s family and the other Jews in the small town of Sighet, fail to escape the country when they have a chance. As a result, the Jewish population is sent to concentration camps all throughout Germany. Then, after being sent to a concentration camp, Eliezer is separated from his mother and younger sister, but remains with his father. The camp then pushing Eliezer and his father 's faith in the Jewish religion.
Night by Elie Wiesel is not an ordinary novel; it's a lesson about human endurance, humanity, and the past that shapes the present we live in now. Introducing this book to 8th graders will greatly change how they view the Holocaust, they will see it through Elie s eyes and not through a textbook. This novel will show and also teach about the horrors of the Holocaust, how humanity is found during hard times, and ethical decision-making. Night will show the dark moments of our past to 8th graders and enlighten them. First Night shows 8th graders the horror of the Holocaust.
Like steel to extreme heat and intense pressure, people often reform when placed under harsh conditions. This has the potential for proxy effects on moral considerations. This moral reformation is often more of a moral degradation as people revert back to their selfish survival instinct. This is evident in Elie Wiesel’s recollection of his experience as a Jew in the Holocaust. Nazi Germany’s transportation of the Jews into concentration camps was executed with a lack of consideration for comfortability.
The horrors of war can change even the kindest of individuals, reshaping them in drastic ways. Wiesel shares his experiences of his losses in the war, where he lost everything and changed the person he was to the person he needed to be. Such trials are a part of life and assert that one is alive by shaping one’s character.
