The Curious Camden Does a Research Paper in the Day and Night-Time

Not all books are a joy to read, especially when someone is as impatient as I am. However, a recent novel that I read was anything but a disappointment. The novel ‘The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime’ was fascinating and drew my attention from the first page. The novel is about an adolescent boy, who has to deal with his diagnosis of autism. In his world, almost everything is from a different perspective, whether good or bad is not for me to decide. There are many articles about this protagonist and much like Christopher, come from different perspectives.

She abandoned him, simply because she could not deal with his autism-related behaviors and even had an affair with another man. She shows no interest in Christopher and is verbal towards him and does not support his math passions. Christopher is not much better than his parents, unfortunately. Christopher is physical, intolerant and disrespects his parents. On several occasions he hits his father after being touched by him. He also yelled at his mother in public, hit a police officer and even threatened to stab multiple people. Christopher has no respect for his parents, either. According to these articles, there are multiple negative vibes about the book. One of these vibes is that Christopher is treated unjustly. The fact that Christopher is insulted, physically abused, betrayed and lied to is not attractive to these readers. In an article published by Goodreads, the writer is frustrated that there is a lot of physical misbehavior and cannot understand why his parents are the standard type of parents who would support and care for a teenager who has a learning disadvantage (Goodreads). In one review written by Elizabeth Bartmess; she states that the author suggests that both violence and disrespect and treating diagnosed with autism poorly are okay to do. There are a couple reasons to back up these suggestions. For one, Christopher is abused and walked all over by his parents and other authority figures. Some might suggest that this would be typical of authority figures to do, since the boy is only fifteen, but it comes without saying that he is picked on, harassed and treated unequally more than the average kid. Bartmess cannot understand why Christopher does not stand up for himself throughout the novel, despite the negativity from his higher-ups. This idea that Christopher is unwilling to stand up for himself suggests that the abuse is okay is society and that it is fine to neglect people with disadvantages. Not only are Christopher’s parents aggressive
