Film Nineteen Eighty Four (1984), is examples of dystopian literature which revolve around the battle of freedom versus conformity. In this film, a protagonist is confronted with the battle of either conforming to laws or fighting for his freedom. That movie is set in a society where the balance of freedom and conformity are skewed up. As a result, the oppressed are faced with the decision of fighting back. This particular film has dystopian elements that can be connected to today’s society and how certain technologies have accounted for a loss of privacy in exchange for safety. The society in Nineteen Eighty Four is under complete control of Big Brother, a political system that wants to keep the inferior in their place. Through totalitarian tactics the general public are controlled and always being watched. A system known as, The Ministry of Truth, is constantly bombarding the public with broadcasts as well as watching their every move to make sure that no acts of “thought crime” are being committed. Facebook is a social network that has over 500 million users worldwide. This particular social network consists of all sorts of personal information including photos and daily posts. In the wrong hands this sort of information could prove fatal. Law enforcement is using this system as a way to get clues on certain cases.
