In both “Ninth ward” and “Response like second disaster”, the authors Jewell Parker Rhodes and Anna Badkhen present the real world issue of Hurricane Katrina. How it affected the lives of millions of people, spactiflicle in New Orleans. In the “Ninth ward” it’s about the survival after the hurricane. While in “response like second disaster” it is about the aftermath of the hurricane. How people reacted and how the government reacted. Both described how tragic it looked after the hurricane struck. With all the sewage and trash. The fiction story “Ninth Ward” put you through the dramatic event of hurricane katrina, through the eyes of Lanesha. The author Jewell Parker Rhodes really elaborated on what it looked and felt like and how destructive it was. One of my favorite descriptions of the horrible destruction was “I look out at the expanse of water. My neighborhood is buried… I look at the water. It’s nasty.” (pg 204). It made me imagine I was there, and was trying to find out what to do. “But I sink slowly into the muddy pitch-black water.” (pg 204) was what I would feel like trying to swim through all the clutter. The author Anna Badkhen described and made you visualize what was happening, and what the hurricane made people do. One girl was so scared to leave her bath tub. One section made me question humanity's loyalty when the passage “Armed gangs prowled the streets,… ”. Why in the world would people gang up and prowl the streets proudly. But the descriptions were so insightful, “... water washed bloated cadavers onto traffic islands, and the only source of light at night were huge fires that devoured structures block after block.”. It was so crazy to read that paragraph, and imagine what it would be like. It astonished me how much damage could be done, and how the government wouldn’t help anyone. People wouldn’t even send
