Understanding Technology: Effects of Texting The essays “No Need to Call” by Sherry Turkle, and “Does Texting Affect writing?” by Michaela Cullington, brings up one great point on how the technology has advanced the society. Many teenagers who are brought up in this advanced society see it more beneficiary and efficient to text, social network chat, or instant message before making a phone call. Electronic media has transformed the society into a more digital platform. Thus, texting enables shy people to open up because it gives an individual time to think about what to say unlike the phone conversation. “It’s only on the screen that shy people open up, (Turkle, p. 380)” because when person thinks about what to say, one can talk to someone he/she had trouble talking to. …show more content…

Her study shows the negative results of texting but many people believe that texting have positive attributes to students, such as motivating students to write using different writing skills, and allowing them to achieve more confidence in their writing. Although texting represents an easy and quick way of communication; it also creates a problem to student’s ability to write. Cullington writes that, “it’s taking over our lives. We can do it almost anywhere.... It’s quick, easy, and convenient (p. 367)” This shows how texting has become general among teenagers and between co-workers in the business world, thus allowing them to send instant messages rather than being engaged into a telephone
