Burton’s dark, twisted, horror-filled movies people all over the world enjoyed as kids have more depth to them than what meets the eye. Burton grew up viewing the world as a dark and lonely place and what brought him joy was bringing that to life in his films. With idols like Vincent Price and Edgar Allen Poe, it’s no wonder Burton had a taste for the gothic side of animation and used inspiration from both in his films. Burton depicts low key lighting and nondiegetic sounds to voice his message that loneliness is more than not having friends, it is feeling like you don’t belong.

Just like lighting, music has a huge impact on people's emotions so naturally, it belongs in film. When Burton uses music it helps differentiate between the characters feeling abandoned or isolated and when they feel loved and cherished again. One way Burton shows this is during the flashbacks to Wonka’s childhood in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. If Wonka is taken back to the miserable past he had, the music changes and loses its light-hearted whimsical feel to show his childhood was lonelier than the times he is in. Similarly, in The Corpse Bride when switching from the real world and the dead world the music changes to match the mood. In Victor’s dreadful real life, there is dreary and bleak music that symbolizes his disbelonging, but when he goes to the underworld the music is bright and buoyant, welcoming him in with open arms. Likewise, in Edward Scissorhands, Edward’s home is introduced with eerie, chilling, nerve-wracking music that is used to make his home seem frightening, and in contrast Peg’s home is shown accompanied by lighthearted and carefree music. This helps the viewer feel like they are in Edward’s shoes and feel welcome and belonging in the new neighborhood away from the mansion.
