In the latest reboot of the 1986 movie She’s Gotta Have It by Netflix, Spike Lee revisits the characters he created more than 30 years ago. Netflix’s 10-episode series will revolve around the lives of the residents in a Brooklyn neighborhood.
The show’s central character, Nola Darling is indeed a force to be reckoned with. She is the living proof against the negative typecasts directed to black people, more specifically black women. Darling represents the ultimate black heroine and is what the millennial woman is all about.
Her sexual exploits are unparalleled. She currently has four lovers namely Mars Blackmon who is an aspiring rapper, model Greer Childs, father and husband Jamie Overstreet, and single mom Opal Gilstrap. Lee knows that if Darling was a man, he would be easily labeled as a player without any negative connotations. Sexism is very much apparent. The U.S. president is sexist and there are so many Harvey Weinsteins existing in the world. These men are getting attention for abusing their power to sexually exploit women.
Darling’s character is challenging the way women are perceived in terms of their sexuality and bodies. At the same time, she also serves as an example on how a lot of women live the same lifestyle but society still refuses to accept it.
