Sad to say that Lincoln’s own legacy did not belong to him alone. Even though he did not owe his whole legacy to himself, he did own the fact of his stance
That Lincoln was afraid that he would never give his speech as the North was not doing very well at that
Malcom X Born into a family of 7 Malcom was the 4th child. Malcom X was born as Malcom Little on May 19, 1925 in Omaha, NE. Malcom faced lots of racism in his early life like his house getting vandalized and his dad getting killed. With all this Malcom X grew up to be one of the greatest African American heroes. He had to face and live through many hardships in like his life without parents.
The details are well known to every American school kid. He shot Lincoln in the back of the head with a .44 caliber Derringer, percussion-cap pistol, during a performance of “Our American Cousin,” at Ford’s Theater in Washington D. C. He then leaped to the stage, breaking his left fibula, shouted, “Sic semper tyrannis!” and may have shouted, “The South is avenged!” Most importantly, Lincoln’s assassination reminded humanity that when a war ends, the animosity between sides may not, and usually does not. To win a war, therefore, regardless of whether it should be fought, or which side is the good side does not put an end to the human capacity to hate.
Into the Wild, a book by Jon Krakauer and a film by Sean Penn, is the story of a young man named Christopher McCandless, or as other people knew him as “Alex Supertramp.” McCandless came from a wealthy family and graduated from Emory University as a top athlete. Instead of pursuing a career, he gave his money to charity, then he set out on a journey to Alaska, to find happiness. Eventually he perished on August 18, 1992 (aged 24). McCandless died in the Alaskan wilderness, due to starvation.
He asked his listeners if the nation was to become endangered, would it sprout from overseas or from within the nation. He was referring to the mobs and others going against the laws of the nation. In the Lyceum Address, Lincoln went on to say that if danger “ever reach us it must spring up amongst us,” and that “we must ourselves be its author and finisher”. He thought that “as a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide”. Lincoln believed that if the nation continued on its destructive path by ignoring the rule of law, the nation in return would destroy itself.
Meanwhile, just before a week after the Civil War ended, Abraham
Douglas ignored and did not address these allegations. Furthermore, Lincoln believed this was an issue of right and wrong and Douglas wants to do wrong. He said to resolve this will and can only be by the power of the federal government to end it completely. Douglas countered this saying and predicting that using morals to solve a political issue would cause a Civil War.
As stated here, "But he also wanted to initiate the uneasy task of bringing the all but defeated South back into the new, more improved Union" ("Abraham Lincoln Biography"). The South hardly had any stamina left. They were hanging on, but barely. Nothing was going to help them. Booth shooting Lincoln didn't help, because even though the South hadn't admitted defeat, they had done everything but.
Lincoln was trying to get the Confederates to give in to the North by January 1st, 1863 (Lincoln 1862). This was a part of the Emancipation Proclamation and if the Confederates were to surrender, they could keep their slaves, and keep the Union
Yet in order to preserve the Union, Lincoln knew that he would ultimately have to abolish slavery. He
Many southerners were angry that the people who were previously their slaves would now be as equally free as them. One man by the name of John Wilkes Booth was extremely angry with the outcome of the war. On April 9, 1865 General Robert E. Lee would surrender his troops which would be a devastating blow to the confederate army. On April 11, 1865, Abraham Lincoln would give a speech outside the White House about the country needed to reunify, Booth who was at the speech then said, “Now, by God I will put him through. That is the last speech he will ever make”.
Lincoln goes all the way back to the Founding Father’s own legislative records to counteract Douglas’s assertion that
Lincoln’s assassination was a horrific event in American history, and to understand its impact on the country, you should look at the assassination itself, the bigger picture, and what happened to the people responsible for Lincoln’s death. To start out, five days after Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, ending our civil war, Lincoln decided to go to the production of “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s theatre in Washington D.C. Although they came late, people said that he was laughing and thoroughly enjoying the play.
(Swanson pg.9) He could not stand another Union victory over the Confederacy. Mr. Lincoln had sat by the first and last president of the Confederate State of America. (John was willing to throw away fame, wealth for a promising future for the cause of his Confederacy).(Swanson pg.10) Booth’s eyes lit up when he heard that the president would be coming to Ford’s theater.
