Before Korea was split into two nations it was occupied by the Japanese, however this was overturned when the Soviets declared war on Japan. To avoid this, the Japanese were forced to leave Korea and leave it under the Soviets and the US. After the Japanese were exiled, Korea was split into two sections by a border line called the 38th parallel. The North were under the influence of the Soviets which ruled under communism. On the other hand were the South which ruled under a provisional government from the US. This agreement from both nations only lasted several years when 75000 North Korean soldiers initiated the Korean War when they crossed over the 38th parallel which separated the South from the North on June 25th, 1950. The war was provoked due to the different perspectives on their government ruling, however the main reason was because of the global tensions from the cold war. On the surface, the Korean War seemed to be a war between North and South Korea, but superpowers of the world were just using it to confront each other without actually going into a war for their nation. In the case where reunification may eventually occur is when the economy of North Korea completely collapses similar to what happened in the Soviet Union. When that happens, South Korea will have no choice but to unite with the North. People have hypothesised that the starvation in North Korea is an indication that the destruction of the North Korean economy is inevitable. To achieve this aim, South Korea should thrive to avoiding future disagreements that may provoke the North into triggering another war, until the North Korean economy collapses.
