What Would You Do?
How would you like to be imprisoned in a country that is not like the United States at all? If you were, how would you escape? The book, Not Without My Daughter, written by the main character, Betty Mahmoody, tells an incredible true story about Betty being imprisoned in Tehran by her husband and how she escaped. It all started when Sayyed Bozorg Mahmoody, or Moody, the husband, said they should take a family vacation to Tehran to visit his family because his family wanted to see Mahtob, their daughter. Betty was skeptical at first but finally decided to go. Once they arrived their Betty and Mahtob both noticed how disgusting and unsanitary the country was. At first, it seemed just like a normal vacation. Betty and Mahtob learned daily rituals that were custom in Tehran and the daily prayer routines. When it was time to finally leave after about 2 weeks and Moody said that they were not going home. He imprisoned them in Tehran and would not allow them to leave the house, talk on the phone, or talk to people about how she wanted to go home. He could get away with this because in Tehran, the man is in charge of the wife and the Pasdar, or police, could not do anything to help Betty and Mahtob. Betty met a lot of people without Moody knowing that were willing to help her. While all of this was happening her father was close to dying from cancer. Betty had a few options: stay in Tehran and continue to be beaten by her husband, use the underground to get her out but without her daughter and never see her again, or what she ended up doing which was the best decision and what I would have done
