First, a young eleven year old boy named Salva who lives in Sudan, is a Dinka, and in 1985, is in school one day, when his village is attacked, forcing him to flee into the bush. The group Salva was with left him, but an older lady living near by gave him peanuts and let him stay in her barn. Salva found a group of his own people and later, a man named Buksa found a beehive and they all ate the honeycomb. A boy named Marial became friends with Salva, and to Salva's joy, Salva found his Uncle, but in the night Uncle woke Salva and told him that Marial was gone.
Even though he isn’t sure if his parents would make it out alive, he follows his teachers’ directions and runs far away from his village. This is also shown toward the middle of the story when Salva witnesses his uncle getting shot right in front of him. Salva is heartbroken, especially because his uncle has been there for him every step of the way. Salva still manages to pick himself up and keep moving.
Linda Park’s A Long Walk to Water follows the stories of Nya and Salva as they experience the effects of the Second Sudanese Civil War. Throughout the novel, Salva has to survive through this war, making it difficult for Salva to live in hopes of finding his family again. Now imagine doing that before you were even 13 years old. In A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the book follows 11 year-old Salva trying to escape war in his home of southern Sudan. He tries to escape The Sudanese Civil War to Ethiopia first, and then to Kenya. During A Long Walk to Water, Salva faces and overcomes many hardships like the civil war, dangerous animals, and harsh living conditions.

The teacher told everyone, even Salva to run into the bush away from the shooting. The first thing that happened to Salva was that he joined a group of Dinkas, but they left him at a barn by himself. Salva was afraid that he will have nowhere to go, but he met Auntie who let him stay for a couple nights until Salva got accepted into another Dinka group.

In the book a Walk to Water Salva and Nya have problems of getting water, but Salva is based on a real person who went through the challenges of losing his family and the brutal Sudanese war. These are some of the challenges he faced and how he solved them with what he had throughout his life. Through harsh challenges Salvas new foster family was always there for him to support and encourage him through tough times.
On this journey of running from war he lost his group of people that are Dinka’s that he was with and stayed in a barn with a woman. He also couldn’t find any of his family at this hard time but when he found a new group of Dinka’s to stay with Salva had found his Uncle. He also made a really good friend. Until they both died and Salva was by himself again with nobody he knew. Some hardships that Salva faced during this time in A Long Walk to Water were lots of water problems, wild animals, and no family.
Due to his fearfulness, he starts to act fragile until he eventually encounters a hardship, in which his uncle, Jewiir, forces him to continue walking through the Okobo desert. This teaches him a lesson and tactic he uses to lead the lost boys through Sudan to Kenya to get to another refugee camp for survival. This lesson taught by his uncle also helps shape Salva’s character. Shaping his character also forces him to persevere more.
