In Mark Twain’s story, “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” a competition is held between a stranger who makes his way into town and Jim Smiley was a gambler and was always prepared to place a wager; he did not care which side he gambled on and he consistently came out the champion. In accordance to the narrator, he was fortuitous, “uncommon lucky.” One afternoon a foreigner arrived in town and Jim, as usual, wanted to put up a wager against him; Jim bet that his frog, Dan’l, could trounce any frog in Calaveras County. The foreigner did not possess a frog, so, Jim went off to locate a frog for the stranger with the intent of winning, like he was accustomed to. Throughout the 1910-1930s, video cameras were first used and manufactured. John Logie Baird first invented the video camera and used it for experimental broadcasting. HISTORY OF VIDEO CAMERAS… MODERN USE OF CCTV… In his story, the main character would have been able to keep an eye on his frog while he was hunting for another one for the stranger. The video camera could have been used for Jim to study his frog and to keep an eye on things so he was sure no one bothered his frog. He could have positioned the camera to record in the background. Therefore, when he left, the camera would be recording while he went to find the man’s frog. When Jim brought back the stranger’s frog he could play back the camera and examined how the foreigner filled Dan’l with the lead pellets. After he watched it, he could have emptied his frog out. Consequently, the men could bet on the frogs fairly. Jim would win, instead of the man taking his forty dollars from the wager. This example of modern technology would alter the whole story and end up in Jim’s favor. The foreigner would not have won the challenge. Jim would have kept his forty dollars he put into the
