As I reflect on the journey my career has taken from the first year of being a very task oriented novice nurse, terrified to speak to the physicians, afraid the parents would ask questions I did not know the answers to, or even worse realize I was brand new. Eventually, I developed my professional voice and looked forward to the opportunity to discuss my patients with the medical team. And to today, where my knowledge and experience provides me the responsibility to be a teacher, advocate, or a friend to a parent whatever is needed at the time. I am honored to be entrusted to care for critically ill infants. In the last 11 years as a neonatal nurse I have participated in the care when the outcome was excellent and I have attended a delivery where we lost the ETT tube on a 24 week infant that we could not get re-intubated and the communication broke down. I have engaged APRN and MD’s committed to providing comprehensive clinical experiences and supervision. The challenges I anticipate are the many demands on my time, which I will need to continue to manage efficiently. I am fortunate to have the support of my family, and continuing to show them my appreciation for their support through this will need to remain a priority.
My education pathway has progressed to meet the essential knowledge foundation for a rapidly changing healthcare system. To be a competent Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and clinical leader I felt it was essential to have the knowledge triad of leadership, efficient healthcare utilization, and complete my NNP. I will graduate with a Master’s in Business Administration with a focus in healthcare finance and operations in January 2017 and a Master’s in Nursing with a leadership focus in the Aug of 2017, and I am confident my education and work experience has been further preparing me for this
