People used to think that nuclear winter could only be caused by a large scale nuclear war between Russia and the United States. However, research by Alan Robock and Owen Brian Toon has shown that even small scale nuclear war between India and Pakistan involving exchange of 100 nuclear warheads would result in global environmental catastrophe. According to Robock and Toon, the only way to eliminate the threat of nuclear winter is to eliminate nuclear weapons altogether. A nuclear war may have an effect on our climate. If this happens we will all experience a “nuclear winter.” It means we will have a period of cold and darkness, caused by a layer of smoke and dust in the atmosphere blocking the sun's rays. Sunlight will automatically diminish in a split second. We can experience the lowest temperatures in the past 1,000 years. The global cooling average would be about 2.3 degrees Fahrenheit and last for several years. The cooling climate may come …show more content…

Burning cities are a great example. They produce massive quantities of smoke, much like atomic bombs would. These enormous amounts of smoke can make breathing and seeing difficult, plus kill millions. In fact, seasonal cycles can show the effects that we have during the time of shorter days and less sunlight. Think about you’re winter trees are lifeless, freezing, no crops, basically dead. Winter normally lasts 3 months. Now imagine if winter lasted for more than 10 years. Not to mention, think 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed this earth. An asteroid hit resulting in smoke and fire mixed together blocking sunlight. They had nothing to eat because all the plants were wiped out. With no food the dinosaurs were dying of starvation and eventually went extinct. The lives of those dinosaurs are no different than ours. By examining past events and test models it can help us understand how harmful atomic bombs can
