My capstone project is about the need for nurses to learn about cultural diversity, cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity. This has been a fascinating project to explore and I am learning about so many cultural beliefs. When a patient's cultural practice is understood competent patient care is rendered and health care disparities are eliminated. For example, in some cultures many people believe that illness and evil can be prevented by following strict religious codes, morals and practices.
In the following paragraphs, the grand theory of Jean Watson will be explored for its usefulness in practice. We will explore how the theory is congruent with current nursing standards and nursing interventions. Next, we will study if her theory has been tested empirically, if it is supported by research and if it is accurate. We will explore if there is evidence that her theory has been used by nursing educators, researchers, and nursing administrators. After carefully analyzing the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, it can be concluded that both characters Friar Laurence and The Nurse are seen as mentors to the lovers. As a result of the two families fighting both characters were forced to become not only mentors, but parents to the couple, which resulted in the Juliet and Romeo building trust in them. Both the Nurse and Frair Laurence have their best interest in mind when making crucial decisions, making sure they are happy regardless of the result. However, when events start ocurring, pressure gets the best of them and they both retreat. The Nurse and Frair Laurence are both responsible for the final tragedy of the play.

Part A As part of my studies of the Perspectives on nursing module I have been assigned to examine dignity as a value which underpins nursing practice. Dignity is a multi-faceted concept and can be defined as ‘’ The state or quality of being worthy of honour or respect’ (https://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/dignity, 2015)’. Respect for the dignity of the person is the number one principle of the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Midwives (NMBI, 2014). Also, this principle notably finds its origins in the Universal Declaration of human rights (United Nations, 1948) (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, 2014).

What does nursing mean to me? Nursing means helping people heal, meeting their needs while they are in your care, listening to concerns, protecting them from harm, and educating them how to care for themselves while treating them with dignity, compassion and respect and giving of yourself to the care of people and community. It is having compassion for people and their health and being a humanitarian, making sure they receive the best care possible. Nurses must also treat families of patients with kindness, realizing they are going through a stressful situation also. Nursing is a responsibility to provide the best care regardless of the patient’s age, race, religion, sex, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or their past.
