She uses this strategy to provide an example that sticks with the reader, because it evokes emotions, and because it demonstrates the contrast characters before and while in the camps, which emphasize the central idea of the novel. In summary, by doing so she is also able to clarify how the camps changed the lives of these people because it makes the readers feel more attached to the story and therefore have a better understanding of the author’s goals and

A major theme in the true story, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park is perseverance. Perseverance is to stay steady in what you are doing or in a purpose, especially when you are faced with difficulties. This is a perfect theme for A Long Walk to Water because the main character, Salva Dut, an 11 year old Sudanese boy, faced many difficulties and kept going. He took things ‘bit by bit, one step at a time’, a lesson he learned from his uncle that helped him get through the desert, and he applied it to his life and kept going and believing his family was alive. Even though he almost died many times, he did not give up, and he went back to his home country and helped many people have better lives by building wells and giving them clean drinking water.
A very important theme in the book A Long Walk to Water is perseverance. The first example that perseverance is an important theme is how Nya walks back and forth to a faraway pond 2 times a day, every day, for seven months a year without stopping. Also, on the path, there are thorns everywhere that are painful to remove. Nya only gets a small bit of water and rest even though it is very hot and dry. Even the water that Nya gets with much pain and suffering is muddy and infected with Guinea Worms.
To begin with, social structure is defined as “the framework of society that was already laid out before you were born” (Henslin, 2015, p. 99). The social structural factors that influence the characters in N.W.A are the environment where they live (inner city neighborhoods of Compton, CA), gang-related crime, racism, and police brutality. These factors shape the characters’ personalities and actions. They are brought up to believe that because they are minorities, they have no hope and need to find a way to deal with everyday life, even if those ways are against the law.
At the age of 13 till the age of 16 the author, Ishmael Beah, pulls himself through many terrible conflicts in Sierra Leone. The author uses conflict to show his readers the realism of his story. By using conflict in many different ways, it allows readers to gain an understanding of how Ishmael struggles changed his life for worse and for better. By using person vs person, person vs society, person vs self, and person vs nature conflict the author is opening doors allowing readers to get a full understanding of Ishmael 's challenges of a life in war. The most commonly seen conflict in ‘A Long Way Gone’ is person vs society.
Many people can respond to adversity in a similar way to overcome the obstacles. For example, how people can adapt to their environment, and learn the positivity from family and friends can help them surpass the adversity. In There are No Children Here, Alex Kotlowitz has showed the life of Lafayette and Pharoah Rivers living through the violent projects of "Henry Honer Projects" and how the boys dealt with all the crime activities that occur there. In Along Way Gone, Ishmael describe the tragedies he had went through in the Sierra Leone War, and explained different ways how he overcomes the different obstacles that he had to deal with. For example, war like environment, loss of his friends and family, and rehabilitation center.

It makes Salva completely change the way he lives, where he lives, and what he lives for. As Salva reflects about the government, “He knew that the rebels from the southern part of Sudan, where he and his family lived, were fighting against the government which was based in the North”(Part 6). Due to there being an outbreak of violence and war in the setting Salva lives he is forced to run away from his family and leave his old life behind and start a new one.
