Film Analysis: Nymphomaniac The movie is Nymphomaniac is a movie about a woman named Joe, and her revealing her sexual journey in her life. The term “nymphomaniac” means a woman who has abnormally excessive and uncontrollable sexual desire, and this was Joe (Dictionary.com). The movie went into vivid and graphic details about Joe’s various sexual relationships. Also showing the audience how she struggled with the concept of love and lust with her spouse Jerôme, who is the other main character. Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to evaluate Joe in a feminist viewpoint, while connecting with the course material about the following: masturbation, sexual objectification, and casual sex. Previously, it was explained that Joe would masturbate while having fantasies about Jerôme. Masturbation is mention in the course book by the philosopher Roger Scruton. Scruton explains that there are two types of masturbation; 1) to relieve a period of sexual frustration, and 2) to replace sexual human encounters (Halwani 242). While also stating that a “normal” masturbation is done by fantasy not but a replacement of the real deal. In Joe’s case she was having a “normal” masturbation because each time she did it, she would visualize Jerôme, by remembering certain body features on him. However, she was also abnormal because the reason she was masturbating only because she didn’t want to have sex with anyone other than Jerôme.
