The way to a convincive speech is with the delivery, and also the context. President Barack Obama gave an inauguration speech for his second term in office in 2013. He reflected on the ambitions and perceptions the American people, along with himself, needed to take in the following years. Along with that, also touched up on his plans for the American development he planned to create using pathos, logos, and ethos. Pathos is dominantly used in Obama’s Inaugural Address, the uses of Ethos and Logos are still present within his words, but are weakly brought up. Concerning ethos, Obama mainly focuses this toward the beginnings of his statements. To provide an example, “ We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths –- that all of us are created equal –- is the star that guides us still... just as it guided all those men and women, sung and unsung, who left footprints along this great Mall, to hear a preacher say that we cannot walk alone; to hear a King proclaim that our individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every soul on Earth” (Obama 4). Here, the evidence of ethos, is used specifically when Obama refers to “We, the people” (Obama 4). This statement is repeated multiple times as the speech continues. What this phrase accomplishes is the ability for Obama to connect with his audience. However, due to the fact that he only references phrases like this very casually, or once in awhile, makes it not his standard tool in speech. Similarly, logos is equally referenced as ethos is, and the quote mentioned above is just one of the few passages that include logos. In other words, Obama seems to use logos to just reference an event or specific name. This is put into pathos segments to give them a state of reality.
