Mental health hides in the shadows of over 1 out of 5 Americans. Obama, our former president, wrote and spoke a speech to help citizens of America realize President Obama used many different types of rhetorical devices and style techniques in his speech called “Reduce the stigma, You are Not alone”. Obama’s speech become very impactful to those who are struggling with mental illnesses in the shadows as well as with those who are not aware of how much is actually affected by mental illnesses. Obama uses a lot of Pathos as well as logos within his speech. This makes the speech become very impactful because with a little bit of emotion and a little bit of logic this could go a long way. These hand movements played a significant role in Obama's speech because it was calming to his audience. To go more in depth, if Obama was to use aggressive hand movements such as hitting the podium or over exaggerated movements them around then it might make listeners not feel comfortable. Therefore, when Obama used his small hand movements it allowed his audience to become comfortable and be able to listen to his speech. Obama uses these small hand movements because it shows readers that Obama does care about mental illnesses (McGregor). Obama took time to research what was important even the small things such as settled hand movements. He knew that small hand movements are better than none because none will make the audience believe that you are unsure or do not know what youre talking about(McGregor). Therefor, Obama once again was able to learn the stylistic devices to his advantage, Obama was able to persuade his audience with such a simple thing such as hand movements. His audience became comfortable with what he was talking about, therefore they were able to listen and understand what President Obama was trying to
