“I couldn’t open up a magazine, you couldn’t read a newspaper, you couldn’t turn on the TV without hearing about the obesity epidemic in America” –Morgan Spurlock
Obesity is a trend that is increasing around the world. More than thirty countries have taken regulatory measures to control this trend. Not only adults but also children are affected. Recent Statistics show 76% adults are obese or overweight (“National Institute of Health”). In the last 30 years the prevalence of obesity in preschool children was doubled. And it has tripled in children 6-19 years. Moreover, ‘obesity is a medical disorder also called corpulence or fatness excessive accumulation of body fat, usually caused by the consumption of more calories than the body can use’. (“The editors of Encyclopedia Britannica”).
This is a health problem that has reached economic and political consequences or social repercussions, affecting all age groups and social levels. What has triggered this controversy in recent years are major medical journals which have published research on obesity. Especially, they have reported that the intake of sweetened soft drinks is a primary cause of obesity. Therefore, public health began to take regulatory measures to control this so-called epidemic.
