We recently have encountered a new trend in our society, and despite the efforts to reduce the rise of obesity statistics in America, it is growing faster and larger. Americans are carrying themselves to obesity, and not only does obesity affect children, but it widely impacts adults.
Adult obesity is a subject that is not critically focused on by healthcare advocates, and it needs attention if we plan to fully conquer the disease that is linked to a growing number of deaths per year. About a third of adults suffer from being overweight and obese in the United States, and within the last 10 years obesity has risen from 32 percent to 38 percent. Individuals and their families, who suffer from this illness, and government officials that work in the health division, must begin concentrating on the issue that effects government expenditure. In 2010, it was recorded that healthcare spending had increased by 20 percent due to obesity, and if the trend continues it is estimated that obesity related medical costs could rise from $43 billion to $66 billion.
Some might say that weight struggles seen in children are a reflection of their parent’s habits. Recently, Michelle Obama has made a staple effort to end childhood obesity with her platform, “Let’s Move”. However, the United States fails to find a prominent spokesperson to voice the dangers and risks of adult obesity. This may be the one initiative that someone has to take to start the movement.
The first step is to tackle the obesity epidemic that is taking over so many lives in the United States. Not only must we provide the educational outlets to better individual’s knowledge on the facts of obesity, but also we must enable and encourage more American’s to eat healthy and be active. There are still a record number of adults that do not currently achieve the recommended amount of physical activity and exercise, and statistics show that adults are consuming 30 percent more calories then they did 40 years
