As the technologies developed, there are several ways to measure our body and this technologies divide people into normal weighted people and who have not. Based on this scientific method, number of people who are defined as obesity is increasing and it is becoming serious problem not only in UK but also growing as a global issue. This essay will discuss using BMI (Body Mass Index), consider how the increase of body measuring technologies influences perceptions of health and healthy behaviours in our society and to individuals. There are main three sources of surveillance obesity in UK are, Health Survey for England, Quality and Outcome Framework and Neighbourhood Statistics. (Townsend, 2009) Health Survey for England shows that 62.1% of adults in UK were overweight or obsess (England, 2015) and 28% were overweighed the children age between 2 to 15 in England in 2012. (Public Health England, 2015) Obesity is claimed to be a source of major national anxiety and also UK is inevitable of obesity. The rates of overweight and obesity in the UK skyrocketed and UK is ranked in the highest level of overweight or obesity rate among Western Europe except for Iceland and Malta, increased by 10 percentages over the last three decades. (Weitz, 2010) Obesity is the factor of potentially life threatening conditions such as type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, some types of cancer or stroke. (NHS Choices, 2014) Also it can cause psychological problem which is effecting one’s quality of life. (Ibid) Obesity used to be considered as high income countries problems because it is directly linked to energy consumption, however, the problem rapidly spreads in low and middle income countries. (WHO, 2015) And it is linked to higher risk of death than underweight worldwide as it is accompany with several other illness.
